Age does matter

I just finished watching Season 2 of Veronica Mars via Netflix. It was one of those shows that a few bloggers liked and many TV critics and other TV writers adored, so I wanted to check it out. It's about a teenaged girl (though she graduated in the latest finale) that is a private detective with her dad's business and often solves crimes for her classmates.

I liked the show, but didn't love it. I'd probably give it a B overall, but I will check it out this Fall to see how things change once they go to college. The writing is actually pretty clever, filled with puns and innuendos that continually make me snicker. The acting is also superb, particularly by the actress playing Veronica, Kristen Bell (she went to Julliard and was on Broadway before the show).

The downside, for me, is that I often thought the mysteries week-to-week were a little boring, though there were a couple of season-long story arcs that were interesting. Part of it may just be that I'm just at that age where teen drama and angst isn't that original or entertaining anymore. I don't need another show about the "haves" vs. the "have nots" and a reminder of how mean teenagers can be to each other. The parts I liked about Veronica were when you almost forgot how old she was because she seemed more mature in many ways.

Maybe it's been a while since I've watched 90210, but I was surprised to see several scenes of teens disrobing and then laying in bed after sex -- a la soap opera style with the sheets covering what they needed to. Though I'm not "that old" at the age of 32, I have to admit that watching these characters of the ages of 17 - 18 stripping down and lying around in the afterglow was...actually kind of awkward. It was almost as eerie as the time I walked in on my parents -- it just felt a little wrong to witness.

Is a sex scene less watchable if the characters are too young, old or is there anything else that you'd rather not see (like George Costanza eating a sandwich mid-coitus)?

Btw, my work load is going to be pretty hectic over the next couple of weeks, so my posting and reading my be a little erratic. This definitely one time when it's actually true for someone to say "it's not you, it's me."
